The sun was out, it was warm and the breeze was on. It was a record breaking year for the Swiftsure Cape Flattery race. Mako finished 17th of 44 in the Cape Flattery race finishing in 14:35:42 a few minuets before midnight. It was by far the fastest Swiftsure for any of our seasoned crew and it was the first Swiftsure for many of us (we are now spoiled).
Here's a snapshot of our track. The course was 102 nautical miles. We has a bad rounding but otherwise went the right direction for the entirety of the race.
Swiftsure Crew of Nine!
Leaving the inner harbor!
Amazing race shots by Gail Takahashi!
A little video. We saw 36 knots a bit later in the day. 15.5 knots was our top speed.
The scene in Victoria, British Columbia
Less than one mile from the the finish we ran over a commercial shrimp pot! We had to stop sailing and cut it free. We had a float on each side of the haul. This cost us a lot of time. Once we finally cleared the float we approached the finish line and a Cruise ship was leaving the harbor! Ugh! It was a tough way to finish after a very brisk downwind 50 mile ride but spirits were high and we thoroughly enjoyed our "free" soup at the inspection dock.
